Why glass candles cost so much to ship
Wax is not the heavy part of a jar candle. The glass is. A common 8 fl oz tumbler can weigh more than the candle inside it, and a thick-walled jar or a ceramic vessel even more. Add a lid, a protective wrap, a box and some crinkle paper, and a candle you think of as “8 ounces” is a package that weighs over a pound. That moves it into a more expensive postage tier, which is why so many new sellers lose money on shipping without noticing.
How USPS Ground Advantage prices weight
Ground Advantage is the service most small candle shops use. At retail, it prices packages under a pound in four steps: up to 4 oz, 8 oz, 12 oz and 15.99 oz. Above that, it rounds up to the next whole pound, so 1 lb 1 oz pays the 2 lb price. The maximum is 70 lb.
Since July 12, 2026, some commercial pricing (the rates you get through label platforms) charges a single rate for anything under a pound. Etsy and Shopify labels use commercial rates, so check which you get. Either way, knowing your packed weight is the first step.
Once you have your packing method, pack one order exactly as you would ship it and weigh it. If it is close to a tier edge, a lighter box or less filler can drop it a full tier, which adds up over a year.
Setting shipping on Etsy or Shopify
Both platforms let you set shipping by weight or by fixed price. If you offer free shipping, the postage comes out of your price, so it must be in your costing. Put the real postage into the cost and price calculator as “postage you pay” and see what is left.
Packing so candles arrive whole
- Wrap each jar so glass never touches glass, and fill empty space so nothing shifts when you shake the box.
- Use a box with at least an inch of padding on every side for multi-candle orders.
- Lids and dust covers protect the surface from scuffs and from wax sticking to packaging in warm weather.
- In summer, ship early in the week and choose waxes with higher melt points for hot regions. Melt points are on the wax specs page.

How much does an 8 oz candle weigh to ship?
More than you might think. A typical 8 fl oz tumbler holds about 6.5 oz of wax, and the glass can weigh 8 to 10 oz on its own. Add a lid, bubble wrap, a box and filler, and a single candle often lands between 1 and 1.5 lb.
What are the USPS Ground Advantage weight tiers?
Retail prices step at 4, 8, 12 and 15.99 oz, then go up for each pound, rounded up, to a maximum of 70 lb. A package at 1 lb 1 oz is priced as 2 lb.
Did USPS change the under-1-lb pricing?
From July 12, 2026, some commercial Ground Advantage pricing charges one rate for everything under a pound. Retail counter prices still use the ounce tiers. Your label software shows the rate you get.
Should I worry about box size?
Yes, for large boxes. USPS can charge by dimensional weight for packages over one cubic foot. Most one or two candle boxes are well under that.
How do I stop candles melting in the mail?
Use a wax with a higher melt point for summer, ship early in the week so boxes do not sit over a weekend, and avoid dark mailers in direct sun. Our wax specs page lists melt points.
